This We Dug : A Certain Ratio

(Wallflower Paul “The P Man” Howland polls the collective memory banks.)

A Certain Ratio formed in Manchester, UK, in 1977. They are still together as a recording entity.

Their cover of Banbarra’s tune “Shack Up” was a favorite of mine in the early ’80s. Here’s ACR’s version. And Banbarra’s original (which I became aware of recently by reading about it in the excellent Waxpoetics magazine).

Both versions of this tune are nice stripped-down funk; the Banbarra version is arguably better, but ACR’s is not without its charms.

“To Each …” was my favorite of their albums back in the day. (I may have to get the re-issue from Soul Jazz.)

The P Man Live In San Diego

(Ex-Wallflower Paul “The P Man” Howland brings his Dubstep stylings to the Kava Lounge June 20 courtesy of Dub Smugglers.)

php9fiACf I’ve been working hard sorting through my tunes to decide which ones to bring down to the Kava Lounge on June 20.

Since I’m playing first, it’s definitely gonna be a fairly mellow set, at least to start out. I’ve got a fair bit of really good unreleased stuff from some UK producers, some new releases, as well as a few favorites of mine that have been out for a while. My set is gonna be from 9 ’til 10 pm, so please try to arrive early. I hope you’ll be able to stick around too, Austin Speed and Criminal (Subliminal DJs) are playing a back to back set after me, then you’ve got headliner Noah D, and doing a special closing set San Diego’s own PK.

The Wallflowers: “Funland” at the Casbah

The Wallflowers’ David Rinck at the Casbah, May 30, 2009 (photo by Dave Doyle)For those who missed Che Games for May in San Diego May 29-30 or just want to relive the magic: Good news! Thanks to modern technology, the event was captured from every angle in photographs, audio and video.

Exhibit A: The original San Diego Wallflowers raise the roof of San Diego’s Casbah with “Funland,” the band’s hypnotic paean to the city’s seamy underbelly, now lost to gentrification. (For memories of the original Funland, check out Kristen Tobiason’s “Then and now” feature.)

The May 30 performance marks the Wallflowers debut of Rockin’ Dog Dave Ellison and features original Wallflowers David Rinck on vocals, Paul Howland on bass and Matt Johnson on drums. (Che Underground jack-of-all-trades Dave Fleminger added keyboard stylings to the set.)

Dubstep Mixed CD available at the Che Underground Shows

(Wallflower Paul Howland puts in the plug for his current audio goodies.)

Wallflowers David Rinck, Paul HowlandI’ll be hawking new product at the show. I made a new Dubstep and Grime mix (heavier on the Dubstep side of things). It’s continuously mixed by me the old fashioned way, with turntables and a mixer. 26 Tunes, all vinyl, were selected to provide a wide range of styles from within the Dubstep and Grime continuum from 2007 right up until some of the very latest releases. Lovingly rendered in gorgeous CDR audio and available at the shows this weekend in a limited numbered edition of 50 for a scant $10 US. For those that don’t want to shell out for the CDR, there’s also plenty of free Dubstep goodness available here.

The Wallflowers: “TV Eye”

Detail: Wallflowers promoThe night I met the Wallflowers, the Stooges’ “TV Eye” was playing on the stereo. I know it was the summer of 1983, when I met so many of you, and I believe my introduction was brokered via Rockin’ Dog Dave Ellison.

That moment forged a lasting connection in my mind between the Wallflowers and the Stooges, an impression that was reified by the Wallflowers’ blistering interpretations of the older band’s oeuvre — including “TV Eye,” presented here in all its synapse-rattling glory.

Per vocalist Dave Rinck, “‘Walldrugs’ and ‘TV Eye’ were recorded in a ‘studio’ at Music Power; ‘Raw Power’ was, too, but not until a little later than the other two.”

Dubstep and grime in San Diego

(Wallflowers bassist Paul Howland extends an invitation to experience his current avocation.)

"Watch Your Dubstep" signMatthew Rothenberg keeps encouraging me to talk about new music on here, so here goes:

Anyone in SD even mildly curious about dubstep and grime should check out MRK1 at the Kava Lounge this week. Read more here. See you there.

P.S. if you do make it down, hit me up for one of my mix CDs.

The Wallflowers: “Walldrugs”

Like the rest of this cache, “Walldrugs” features the original Wallflowers lineup of Dave Rinck (vocals), Paul Howland (bass), Tommy Clarke (guitar) and Aaron Daniels (drums).

“’Walldrugs’ and [Stooges cover] ‘TV Eye’ were recorded in a ’studio’ at Music Power,” Dave Rinck writes. “‘Raw Power’ [another Stooges cover] was, too, but not until a little later than the other two.
