The Wallflowers: ‘Walldrugs’ at Che Games

wallflowers_walldrugs_frame03One year later, we’re finally on deck to start releasing performance footage shot by Eric Rife at May 2009’s Che Games for May reunion, synchronized to Jason Brownell’s high-fi audio courtesy of resident polymath Dave Fleminger.

First up, the first live performance of the original San Diego Wallflowers’ signature “Walldrugs” since 1985. Lead singer David Rinck reflects on resurrecting the song:

“When we were putting together the Wallflowers set list for the Che Games last year, we had to listen closely to the old recordings to figure out how we played those tunes, in order to get us all on the same page on the arrangements and all, since with me in Africa and the rest of the band spread out all over California, we were basically working via the Internet.”

New P Man Podcast For SD Dubstep

(The latest from Paul Howland, a k a P Man.)

pman-80-300x300I made a new mix for the SD Dubstep Podcast. The selections are are combination of recent releases, classics, and unreleased material.

The Q and A consists of questions posed by members of The P Man Show Facebook Group. Big ups to the Facebook group; all the artists and labels that sent me tunes, SD Dubstep, and all my peeps; oh, and last but not least, to Heather for the photography.

Fused Forces to cover P Man show

(More international love for the work of Paul Howland, a k a P Man.)

album_pman_photo040I’m pleased to announce Fused Forces will be covering my weekly CybaFM show on Tuesday March 9 at 10 pm GMT. (I’m gonna be out of town.)

For those who don’t know, Fused Forces are a two man production and DJ team out of Essex UK. They’ve got an impressive discography of vinyl and digital releases, as well as a whole slew of really good Dubstep Forum freebies. They are known for their Dubstep and Grime stylings, but they assure me they are gonna switch it up a stylistically for this special cover show.

The Return Of The P Man

(A New Year’s dubstep update from Paul Howland, a k a the P Man.)

album_pman_photo040Actually, I haven’t gone anywhere. I’ve been doing my radio show every week, but it’s been a while since I played out. Which is why I’m super excited that Brokenbeat has asked me to play their first night of 2010.

I’m gonna be playing the 10:45 to 11:45 timeslot so I’m gonna be catering my selections for maximum dancefloor impact. If you end up making any silly new years resolutions regarding drinking, dancing and just generally having a good time, Saturday will be the perfect time to break them. If you haven’t done so already, check out my podcasts for SD Dubstep, and some of my radio shows and other podcasts.

Cecil “P’Nut” Daniels speaks

Cecil Daniels playing trumpetOne of the most exciting revelations inspired by Che Underground: The Blog was the reintroduction to our circle of original Wallflowers drummer Cecil “P’Nut” Daniels.

His arrival from Texas in the early ’80s (under the name Aaron Daniels) and unlikely alliance with the nascent Wallflowers wrought a profound influence on the band and on other members of our crew, such as Kristen Tobiason and Patrick Works.

Wallflowers’ first lineup“Aaron elevated the proceedings,” writes Wallflowers bassist Paul Howland. “He showed me how to play slap-style bass, (which we called ‘Thumpin’ ’ or ‘Poppin’ ’); played me recordings of some of the best purveyors of that technique; and even showed me how to set up an amp properly to achieve the right sound to enhance the technique.

Then and now: The Che Cafe

(High time! Che Underground documentarian Kristen Tobiason revisits the spot that gave the blog its name.)

Detail: Che logo, September 2009 (photo by Kristen Tobiason)The first time I landed on the surface of the Che Café was at an early-evening soundcheck for the Wallflowers (not the Jakob Dylan pansy MTV sensation, but the raw & funky, OG Wallflowers), who were opening that night for Noise 292.

Detail: Sergio and David Rives, Che Cafe, 1983 (collection Carol Coleman)Arriving and styling in Paul Howland’s parents’ green station wagon, we unloaded a couple pieces of equipment, and then proceeded to hang out in the woodsy picnic areas surrounding the venue, creating a smoky haze amidst talk of music and the humor of Tom and Paul’s use of ordinary soap as an alternative to dime-store hair gel.

Embrace the new fakeness

(Wallflower Paul “The P Man” Howland offers new dubstep mixes.)

SDdubstep recently asked me to make a podcast for their site; I made two. The first one is a little mellower than the second. They are rendered as 320-bit-rate .mp3s (High Quality For Your Listening and Dancing Pleasure).

There’s also a little interview of me conducted by EshOne (founder of SDdubstep and a mighty producer, graphic designer and DJ in his own right). Enjoy the mixes and the interview here.
