Eris Sisters: “Blue Orange Candy”

Here’s a striking new collaboration with deep roots in San Diego: Eris Sisters, an electronica duo featuring Kristi Maddocks (Everybody Violet) and Clay Colgin (Men of Clay), a k a MCC.

They recently released their debut record “DownHEAR” on True Node Records.

Bamboohead 3000 on Terry Marine

Bamboohead coverClayton Colgin continues to reimagine his formative Bamboohead ‘zine online. This week, Bamboohead 3000 touches bases with another historic figure of the San Diego punk scene: Terry Marine, founder of Be My Friend magazine and a familiar face to anyone who frequented the SD underground of the late ’70s and early ’80s.

“I was always fascinated by Terry because something told me he was crazier than most of us,” Clay writes by way of introduction. “Nobody ever told me to watch out for him, and I never heard any ugly stories about him back then. I never saw him needlessly brutalize anyone. I did see him rush to defend the ranks when particularly-ornery-crews of LA-punks would come to our shows for the purpose of flexing fear-and-intimidation. He never shied from these situations.

Bamboohead’s back!

Bamboohead coverWe’ve cited Clayton Colgin’s Bamboohead among the influential ‘zines that helped shape the underground aesthetic of San Diego at the turn of the ’80s. In honor of the new millennium and the net, Clay has reimagined his brainchild as Bamboohead 3000, available now on a MySpace page near you!

First up: an interview with Sasha Pfau of the Hot Moon, “a young band in San Diego that I first saw about six months ago … who just continue to energize my sense of what a young modern young band can be about today in the 21st century.

Men of Clay: Artifacts

MOC zebra 11.13.81 bwCourtesy of Clay himself, here’s a set of artwork that evokes his work as editor of Bamboohead and eponymous frontman for Men of Clay.

As these flyers demonstrate, MoC performed frequently in San Diego at the turn of the ’80s and was featured in 1983’s “Our Blow Out” compilation. So far, however, we’ve only discussed the band in passing. Please chime in with your memories of Men of Clay!

Opening Kings Road Cafe

Detail: Kings Road Cafe opening party flyer (collection Jason Seibert)Jason Seibert’s generous donation of early-’80s San Diego flyers offers a prime opportunity to open discussion of the Kings Road Cafe (née the International Blend), a small venue that played an enormous role in fostering and showcasing an eclectic mix of bands.

Detail: International Blend flyer, Dec. 22, 1981 (collection Jason Seibert)The Seibert Collection represents a slice of life at Kings Road in the summer of 1982, starting in June when the club morphed from the I-Blend under the management of Peter “English” Verbrugge. Other artifacts, including a July 1982 calendar (with membership card offer!), highlight the variety of performers that visited 4034 30th St. that summer, both San Diego regulars and up-and-coming out-of-towners.

Have you ‘zine me? San Diego’s indy music mags

Detail: Quasi-Substitute #2, 1980 (collection Dean Curtis)Another pillar of SD punk’s plastic arts (along with music, tattoos and flyers) were ‘zines, the samizdat publications created by luminaries such as Marc Rude, Harold Gee, Terry Marine and Clayton Colgin.

Over in the Che Underground forum (separate registration required), Dean Curtis and Toby Gibson, among others, have been bringing these treasures to light. One of Dean’s first contributions was Issue 2 of Quasi-Substitute, dating from 1980 and featuring the Crawdaddys on the cover.
