Live at Lestat’s: An underground evening

On the evening of Thurs., Nov. 4, we again converged on the little theater at Lestat’s Coffee House on Adams Ave. in Kensington, which is beginning to feel like home for some of us here.

Lestat’s most recently hosted the first night of the Che Underground Rock and Roll Weekend on July 30 and 31, and the Nov. 4 show was an exciting follow-up to that event. Some of San Diego’s finest underground musicians offered up an eclectic array of sounds from a range of genres. At the same time, the visual arts were represented by terrific graphics, photography and video recording, some of which is available here.

No school like the old school dept.: Low tech jumps into 2010 on Sept. 10 when our own P Man (née Wallflowers bassist Paul Howland) joins a roster of other talented DJs in full-analog mode at SDDubstep’s “Dead Technology” event. No laptops, no CDs … It’s all vinyl, and that’s final.

San Diego’s Kava Lounge (2812 Kettner Blvd., San Diego) will host this digital-free zone. In addition to the P Man, featured acts include EshOne, Misk, Pure Boom Hi Fi and Beingstok.

Fused Forces to cover P Man show

album_pman_photo040 I’m pleased to announce Fused Forces will be covering my weekly CybaFM show on Tuesday March 9 at 10 pm GMT. (I’m gonna be out of town.)

For those who don’t know, Fused Forces are a two man production and DJ team out of Essex UK. They’ve got an impressive discography of vinyl and digital releases, as well as a whole slew of really good Dubstep Forum freebies. They are known for their Dubstep and Grime stylings, but they assure me they are gonna switch it up a stylistically for this special cover show.

The Return Of The P Man

Actually, I haven’t gone anywhere. I’ve been doing my radio show every week, but it’s been a while since I played out. Which is why I’m super excited that Brokenbeat has asked me to play their first night of 2010.

I’m gonna be playing the 10:45 to 11:45 timeslot so I’m gonna be catering my selections for maximum dancefloor impact. If you end up making any silly new years resolutions regarding drinking, dancing and just generally having a good time, Saturday will be the perfect time to break them. If you haven’t done so already, check out my podcasts for SD Dubstep, and some of my radio shows and other podcasts.

The P Man Live In San Diego

I’ve been working hard sorting through my tunes to decide which ones to bring down to the Kava Lounge on June 20.

Since I’m playing first, it’s definitely gonna be a fairly mellow set, at least to start out. I’ve got a fair bit of really good unreleased stuff from some UK producers, some new releases, as well as a few favorites of mine that have been out for a while. My set is gonna be from 9 ’til 10 pm, so please try to arrive early. I hope you’ll be able to stick around too, Austin Speed and Criminal (Subliminal DJs) are playing a back to back set after me, then you’ve got headliner Noah D, and doing a special closing set San Diego’s own PK.

Dubstep and grime in San Diego

Enter P Man

I first encountered Dubstep when I downloaded a recording of a radio show on London Pirate station Rinse FM from barefiles.com. The show was the “DJ Youngsta” show with his longtime MC, Task. As I remember the first tune was one by an artist known as D1 entitled “Degrees.” I was immediately intrigued by the sound.

I started downloading more sets from Rinse, including “Stella Sessions” by Skream. One of the tunes Skream was playing a lot at the time was Conquest “Hard Food.” I looked around on barefiles and saw that Quest had a show, so I downloaded a bunch of his archived shows. I ended up purchasing “The Hard Food E.P.” from dubplate.net, along with D1 “Degrees” and a bunch of others.
