The Wallflowers: ‘Walldrugs’ at Che Games

wallflowers_walldrugs_frame03One year later, we’re finally on deck to start releasing performance footage shot by Eric Rife at May 2009’s Che Games for May reunion, synchronized to Jason Brownell’s high-fi audio courtesy of resident polymath Dave Fleminger.

First up, the first live performance of the original San Diego Wallflowers’ signature “Walldrugs” since 1985. Lead singer David Rinck reflects on resurrecting the song:

“When we were putting together the Wallflowers set list for the Che Games last year, we had to listen closely to the old recordings to figure out how we played those tunes, in order to get us all on the same page on the arrangements and all, since with me in Africa and the rest of the band spread out all over California, we were basically working via the Internet.”

New P Man Podcast For SD Dubstep

(The latest from Paul Howland, a k a P Man.)

pman-80-300x300I made a new mix for the SD Dubstep Podcast. The selections are are combination of recent releases, classics, and unreleased material.

The Q and A consists of questions posed by members of The P Man Show Facebook Group. Big ups to the Facebook group; all the artists and labels that sent me tunes, SD Dubstep, and all my peeps; oh, and last but not least, to Heather for the photography.

Fused Forces to cover P Man show

(More international love for the work of Paul Howland, a k a P Man.)

album_pman_photo040I’m pleased to announce Fused Forces will be covering my weekly CybaFM show on Tuesday March 9 at 10 pm GMT. (I’m gonna be out of town.)

For those who don’t know, Fused Forces are a two man production and DJ team out of Essex UK. They’ve got an impressive discography of vinyl and digital releases, as well as a whole slew of really good Dubstep Forum freebies. They are known for their Dubstep and Grime stylings, but they assure me they are gonna switch it up a stylistically for this special cover show.

Come with me to the Casbah!

Pepe Le PewGive me a ticket for an aeroplane … Ain’t got time to take a fast train! Jan. 30’s Che Underground event at the Casbah proved too tempting to pass up. I just bought my fare from snowy New Jersey, and I hope to see you while I’m in sunny San Diego.

Our Che Games for May event was a blast — this time out, I’m looking forward to having more of a chance to relax and enjoy the evening and the company of some good friends. Please join me!

To recap highlights of this historic musical showcase:

The Return Of The P Man

(A New Year’s dubstep update from Paul Howland, a k a the P Man.)

album_pman_photo040Actually, I haven’t gone anywhere. I’ve been doing my radio show every week, but it’s been a while since I played out. Which is why I’m super excited that Brokenbeat has asked me to play their first night of 2010.

I’m gonna be playing the 10:45 to 11:45 timeslot so I’m gonna be catering my selections for maximum dancefloor impact. If you end up making any silly new years resolutions regarding drinking, dancing and just generally having a good time, Saturday will be the perfect time to break them. If you haven’t done so already, check out my podcasts for SD Dubstep, and some of my radio shows and other podcasts.

Holiday cheer from Sweeney Todd’s

martin,-kay---AWallflowers guitarist turned demon barber Todd Lahman encourages Che Underground: The Blog to spread the holiday cheer with this invitation to raise a glass at Sweeney Todd’s Barber Shop on Hollywood Blvd.

I’ve been looking for an opportunity to recognize Sweeney Todd’s, the ultra-cool shop founded in 1927 and refurbished by Mr. Lahman. By all accounts, he’s parlayed his rock-‘n’-roll sensibilities into a world-class shrine to the classic tonsorial arts.  (Anyone up for joining me in a haircut before the Jan. 30 show at the Casbah?)

Even Dave Wallflower gets the blues

(Wallflower/Blues Gangster/BeatHog David Rinck waxes indigo and finds the musical treatment for it. What’s your prescription?)

Bluesy DaythumbThe other day I had the blues
I walked down the street in my old shoes
I know you won’t believe it’s true
But even Dave Wallflower gets the blues …

Yes, even Dave Wallflower gets the blues. Had ’em for a while now. Go’n through some hard times.

But that Sunday morning a few weeks ago in Liberia, brothers and sisters, I was down. I’d just come out on a long flight from Nairobi the night before, and I was tired. I headed out of the hotel and down those beat old streets for my early morning walk.

Penetrators reunion, January 2010!

Detail: Penetrators group shotChe Underground: The Blog has been immeasurably enriched by our recent interactions with the Penetrators. As Ray Brandes has chronicled here, the Penetrators have been one of the most influential and beloved forces in San Diego’s music underground from the band’s genesis in 1977 until decades after its dissolution in 1984.

Good news for all their fans: Pens frontman Gary Heffern has given us the green light to announce a run of Penetrators-related fun at San Diego’s Casbah from Jan. 27-31, 2010 — including an evening presented by the Che Underground.
