Their cover of Banbarra’s tune “Shack Up” was a favorite of mine in the early ’80s. Here’s ACR’s version. And Banbarra’s original (which I became aware of recently by reading about it in the excellent Waxpoetics magazine).
Both versions of this tune are nice stripped-down funk; the Banbarra version is arguably better, but ACR’s is not without its charms.
“To Each …” was my favorite of their albums back in the day. (I may have to get the re-issue from Soul Jazz.)
There’s a good movie about the music scene in Manchester called “24 Hour Party People” that stretches from the Sex Pistols’ performance in Manchester in 1976 through the Acid House era at the Hacienda nightclub in Manchester in 1992. (Well, the movie is actually about television journalist/factory records label head/owner of the Hacienda nightclub Tony Wilson, but I digress.)
Anyway, good stuff. Thanks to Ryk Groetchen for posting an ACR video on the Facebook and reminding me about these guys, and to Jeff Lucas, who I think is the person who turned me on to them in the first place.

I love ACR. “To each…” also my favorite of their recordings. What can I say — once a Factory records fan, always a factory records fan!
24 Hour Party People is fabulous, too. I am happy that a friend sent me that on DVD.

I also sample the hell out of both of them, in my “home cookin'”.

A few months back I got the Soul Jazz ACR collection “Early”. Great liner notes discuss spray-on tans and the ACR/ESG connection. Second disc has b-sides, outtakes, and video. Highly recommended!
Nice one Matt, yeah… Soul Jazz is on the case with the re-issues and the new releases. The re-issue stuff always has good liner notes too.
