The Comeuppance: Bringing it home

The Comeuppance; Lestat's Coffee House, July 12, 2010 (photo by Lou Damian)Dave Fleminger β€” veteran of San Diego’s Answers, Mirrors and Manual Scan and a chief architect of our Che Underground events β€” is down from San Francisco for the month to prepare for the Che Underground Rock-‘n’-Roll Weekend July 30-31.

Among the first-night acts at Lestat’s Coffee House: the Comeuppance, Dave’s current collaboration with cellist Heather Vorwerck. The duo last week made its San Diego debut at a Lestat’s open mic, and I asked Dave what it was like playing his new material on our old turf after so many years away.

“It felt like we were telling stories about what life’s been like ever since,” Dave responds. “I haven’t lived in San Diego for 25 years as of this August, so it’s really moving to share these songs here with friends who lent an ear years ago.”

Dave Fleminger and the Answers will reunite July 31 at Bar Pink. Get reacquainted here!

“While I do feel like a different person now and then, in this town I often find myself just simply finding myself … and while I was singing ‘Fell Song’ I had to keep it together when I got to the lyric about how I’ve lost my way, and one of the paths I’ve taken before might be the path that takes me home.”

  1. If I had to pick the one musician in our lives whose skills consistently leave me slack-jawed, it’d be Dave Fleminger.

As a musical chameleon, Dave surpasses the mark in every varied musical setting I’ve ever seen him thrust into over the years. And amazingly, his own artistic vision has remained focused and true.

He’s got an incredible partner in Heather Vorwerck, and I am sure they will knock San Diego on its collective ear.

  2. Oh, fantastic clip -- and too brief. Dave, I love the peculiar breaking of the lines on the lyric. The delivery introduces a hesitancy that suggests something deliberate, rather than uncertain. The unexpected rhythm produces poetry or lyric from lines of plain statement.

I think we need to have posted more Comeuppance (a word redolent of Victoriana!) recordings, at the very least!

I am sorry I haven’t been able to make these dang things!

New Career in a New Town… At least I am optimistic in my daily profession, for the first time in over 6 years.

For you just wish and you are here
Then you feel your heart beating
    Thrum-pum-pum-pum

Jeremiah: RE Victoriana and these wonderful musicians, did you spot the link to the Comeuppance’s coincidental soundtrack to Cecil Hepworth’s 1903 “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland”?

I actually thought of you the minute I saw how Dave brought the old and new elements together. (In matters aesthetic, I guess I still refer to the Cornelius litmus test after all these years!) πŸ™‚

  4. This just in…
The Comeuppance will be performing at the Pacific Beach Java Jones coffeeshop this Saturday from 6-8pm, 4978 Cass St, between Loring St & Wilbur Ave, San Diego.
Come on by for some tunes and a cuppa organic coffee.

Historical note: The PB Java Jones location is within a block or so of the building that once housed the infamous Bay Signs shop, home of some pretty seriously rockin late-night jams once upon a time in The West.

  5. I’m sad to say I am missing all the shows this July. All the better to experience the treat of seeing this footage of The Comeupaance performing live on stage. The pair never fail to impress me with their creative empathy and musical intelligence. Dave and Heather make it look so easy! They have really forged a unique sound that is both soothing and compelling at the same time….Well done you two! have a great show next weekend everybody.I’ll be thinking of everybody!

  6. Kind words, Matt.

Yes, I really enjoyed the soundtrack -- intentional or coincidental. Dave does some remarkable stuff here. At times -- using the juxtapositions I enjoy -- he sounds to me like Django Reinhardt through the eyes of Robert Fripp.

I sure hope this doesn’t trivialize, by a mean comparison. It is meant to be elevating and complementary.

  7. Regrets! I’m reading the above at 8:37 AM August 4th, with no TV handy…. But there’s still time to attend the show tonight. See you there.
