You asked for it, we’ve got it: The recent success of the PDF set of mod-themed flyers from the Ken Fugate Collection prompts a 31-page volume of punk classics from early ’80s San Diego, courtesy of our beloved Jason Seibert.
The Seibert flyers reference a variety of venues, including Fairmount Hall, North Park Lions Club and the Adams Avenue Theater (many of them organized by Marc Rude’s Dead or Alive). San Diego acts include Personal Conflict, Men of Clay, No Age Limit, the Skullbusters, Social Spit, Manifest Destiny, Catch-22, Moral Majority, V-5, 5051, the Nutrons, the Middle Class, Battalion of Saints, District Tradition, the Front, Sacred Lies, the Injections and Black Tango.
Out-of-town talent includes Flipper, the Cramps, Christian Death, Dead Kennedys, D.O.A., TSOL, Stiff Little Fingers, Black Flag, the Adolescents, the Misfits, Geza X, Anti-Pasti, the Circle Jerks, U.K. Subs, Husker Du, Angelic Upstarts and 45 Grave.
These artifacts are not pristine, but that makes them even cooler, and a few of the hand-scribbled annotations truly set the scene.
Bonus trivia question: Who were the “Beatnik Love Angels”?
Every flyer tells a story, some of them rather complicated. Check out the narrative on Page 2, on the flyer advertising a Fairmount Hall show with TSOL, Moral Majority and 5051:
“Don’t be misled by rumors started by those who pretend to know what’s going on. TSOL isn’t canceled, but the only show upcoming for certain is this one, due to neighborhood complaints to the police. No one likes people throwing shit in their yard and playing tape decks in the alley at midnite. But if this show comes off OK, the Circle Jerks, the Effigies (from Ohio) and Sacred Lies will play on the 22nd.”
BTW, can someone help ID more of the artists behind these flyers? We know Toby and Bobby Lane, of course, but who’s “MW”? “Deerman”? “Mick”? “Cleo”? “Lee”? “Pete”? “Rick”? “Paul”?
“Lee” is easy- and he’s checked in here briefly. That is Lee Ellingson also of Testicle Head Comics fame.
Testicle Head lololz!
I recall that name, anything else is lost to the fog of time…
I think that was Mike Muir (later from Suicidal Tendancies) that got his nose broken on the Decline.
Heard a story about Testi getting stopped by the cops and he told them his name was “Ted Seiglehaud”. They bought it.
I have just about the same collection plus a few bazzillion more and it would be 100 bazzillion if my mom would not of tossed a bunch.
What’s up Jason
Hahaha! This blog commenter also credits Mike Muir as the broken-nose guy:
“He is the guy who got on stage before the encore, grabbed the mic and started telling everyone about how he is going to get revenge on the guy that busted his nose ‘wook at my node, wook et it!’ Another guy to the side grabbed a different mic and chimed in ‘Maybe it was an accident’ Now that was funny! ‘Et wudden no accident!!’ ”
What a wonderful transcription! If memory serves after many years, he does sound a little like Buckwheat! LOL
It’s great seeing these, thanks Ken! Some of you may recall parties at me and Mike’s place at 35th and Meade. Our bathroom wall was covered with flyers, including some of these. Well, they got pretty messed up from moisture so we tossed them all when we moved out.
I meant to Say thanks to Jason Siebert for these!
>>I have just about the same collection plus a few bazzillion more
Marky: Put up, friend! Can you roll us a PDF at smallest file size? I’m totally stoked about this method of posting many flyers in digestible form.

All he wanted was a Pepsi.
I’m pretty sure the flyers by “mick” would be Micky Minor who had something to do with dead or alive shows
Jason call me.
I think Pete would proably be pete english.
Great collection, Jason… thanks for sharing these!
Cleo was Cleo, also known as Lori, possibly Lori Piper, she was dating Marc Rude when I met her and later married Dennis Frame of the Nutrons.Cleo figured pretty prominently on the scene around 1980 when I first met her.I’m sure Dave Klowden and Dave Rinck remember her. There were parties at her house on Mt.Alifan or one of the neighboring streets in Clairemont,summer/fall of 1980.That’s where I met Dave Klowden as a matter of fact,we were both 15.
Cool flyers. Manny I have never seen. Being quite the rat packer, I have many that are in great shape. All SD show with most from Adams Ave / Fairmount / Wabash days. I was a little too young for Zebra Club / Lions Club but I have many from those days also. Given to me from Paul, who used to sing for the Skull Busters. They are all in great shape.
Would like to post and share with all. Is it possible?
Billy, look and see if you have a some flyers done by Paul, if i remember right “Paul” made some flyers for skullbuster shows. Paul Lima
Matt
I guess I would have to scan them all in before making a PDF.
Not sure when that could happen.
Eric Rife scanned everything I have not to long ago. I never got the files. I will see if I can get them.
Billy (and everybody): More stuff would be great! Thanks for the offer. 🙂
E-mail any files to cheunderground@gmail.com. If you’re not a digitizing type, drop a line there and we’ll figure out a snail-mail solution.
To anyone here in SD regarding the above, if you want to meet up I can scan these (it’s what I do…) and do them justice, and to anyone outside SD as per Matt’s suggestion if you’re interested.
Also any post work is no problem either (again it’s what i do…).
Hi Kevin,
Not sure if any I have were actually done by Paul himself or any of his brothers. I’ll check though.
Mmrothenberg,
I’ll plan on scanning my flyers into PDF form. I’ll be scanning them at work during open time so may take a bit. Should be worth the wait though. Will make sure you get the files so you can share with all.
Thanks all for the feedback.
BILLY

Thanks Toby,It’s really nice to see both Cleo and Marc again.Do you have any idea where she is these days?
Not a clue. sorry.
I forgot to add that the credit on that clipping is compliments of Kevin Kress’ (O.G. Cardiff punk) flyer and clipping collection.
Ya know, looking at that clipping up there, I can’t remember when I last saw the term “punkers” written out.
It was a huge irritant back in the day, wasn’t it? Now it sounds kind of … quaint. I picture small forest-dwelling people collecting dried moss for kindling.
Punker is the new punk. I find it kind of cool in a dorky sort of way. After everyone began taking themselves too seriously, and after that wore out and everyone can laugh at ourselves- then we can say “punker” without laughing.
Wow, I get out of selfinduced hell, go to rehab, end up in Northern California and find this. Glad its all apreciated . Im single again so if any washed up old punk chicks are looking for the same in male package Toby will refer me. im cute
Jason???

What’s up?
I’m still alive, still drawing and I’m working on a new graphic novel. I was wondering if there was any interest in bring back Testicle Head?
I have a couple of new projects I’m working on but to make a living I’m doing work as a consultant doing graphics for the military and government. The pay is crazy, I travel all over the country and I work insane hours. I’m working in DC right but will be back in San Diego next week. Life is good.
Lee
Bobby Lane where are you? Eric is looking for.
Lee
Havn’t heard from you in a while. I would like to see some more Testicle Head comics. Do you still have The Gnarly Boys drawings?
I’m living in St. Louis now.
Dan
of course there is interest in Testicle Head comics..
has anyone seen or heard from John Toner?
Yes. John is alive and happy and wants to go surf.
Did Laurie Piper ever have a mohawk with pink leopard pattern on the sides?
“Yes. John is alive and happy and wants to go surf.”
seriously Toby?
hey, if you ever get ahold of him again..
could you please
Tell him I (Mike Frederick) said hi, and pass along my contact info?
thanks
Facebook.
Ah Cleo. When I was 16 I had such a huge crush on her.
If you haven’t encountered this review of Battalion of Saints’ “Fighting Boys,” it’s high-larious … And the comments (including some by folks who post here) evoke the era very nicely.
Wondering where some of those flyers came from? I grew up in San Diego going to shows from 1981 on. I had my whole collection taken from me from someone around 1988. I saw the Dead Kennedys flyer at fairmount hall with the big boys name crossed out with catch -22 written in. I did that. I had that on my bedroom wall.
Great to see the old flyers again. Love it.
