Eric Rife previews ‘Garageland’ footage

Good news for fans of San Diego music in particular and local music scenes in general: Eric Rife’s epic film project “Garageland” is approaching release in 2012, and Eric has posted a short preview of the film on YouTube.

Readers of Che Underground: The Blog as well as veterans of San Diego music are familiar with Eric’s work as a photographer and videographer. Indeed, his years of work pulling together archival and current footage for “Garageland” was an inspiration for me to start this blog in the first place.

“When the credits roll, I want people to do what I would do after seeing a film like this — rush home, jump on the Internet and find out as much as possible about the various bands, venues, etc.,” Eric told the San Diego Union-Tribune in a November 2009 article. “I want someone in Podunk, Iowa, to see my film and say ‘Hey, we had a pretty good scene here in 1981. Someone should make a film about that. And if this dork can do it, so can I.’ ”

Enjoy the footage in this video clip, including select insights from the Injections’ Lou Skum on the hazards of expectoration on fabric.

  2. This is great! We’ve been seeing Eric at gigs with his camera for the last couple of years, and dying to see how it all looks! Can’t wait to see the results.

Eric, I wanna accept your invitation to come by one weekend and take a look at the footage you have. You’re capturing history. Let us know what we can do in terms of getting a sound
    track CD out there!

  3. Looks fantastic Eric!
I’m with David & Lou…congrats on decades of work coming to fruition. And please trasmit your debut info wide, as I will make sure to fly down to SD from the Bay Area for the premier event!

I do not consider myself a staunch feminist, but I want to encourage you to remember to keep track of the female elements within our scene. Just looking at the Sceneroller map, I can’t help but notice that it is lacking in the presence in the feminine network of bands.

I’ll do my part by going on Sceneroller this afternoon and work on filling out information on Everybody Violet, Blues Gangsters, Eris Sisters. as you may or may noy know, I am involved in Gary Heffern & Beautiful People (as a guest vocalist). I’ll also contact Joey Miller, Kristin Martin, & Anni S. to fill out info on their bands, as they both played big parts in the SD scene.

Pease let me know if I can help you in any way! Great work! You rock!
