As we prepare our Che Underground family reunion for Leap Night 2020, a highlight of this magnificent evening is a musical set fronted by by none other than Jeremiah Cornelius — back on a San Diego stage for the first time in decades.
Jerry Cornelius was a legendary presence on the scene: writing, illustrating, managing, MCing and otherwise setting the tone of the entire Che Underground. His taste was impeccable, and his influence extended across the bands of the era.
Check out the details of ‘A Che Undeground Leap Night Showcase’!
Jerry always cut a striking figure. As Che Underground gadfly Tom Ward recalls, “For awhile [Jerry] was in a full-blown Davy Jones & the Lower Third incarnation that was stunning. I remember a total Carnaby-exploitation-type high-buttoning striped jacket and some incredible back-combed ‘ginger’ hair–later he would be much more Rococo, eventually all-black-clad and black-haired, and even bigger-haired – like he was in the Ronettes and an Edgar Allen Poe story, combined (but listening to The Smoke and maybe John’s Children) … ”
Supporting our main man at the Riviera Supper Club & Turquoise Room will be The Cooler Heads, one flavorful layer of the evening’s parfait of veteran San Diego talent, both locally sourced and imported.
Thrill to the sounds of The Wrecktangle, a lineup annealed at the forge of SD musical treasure Gary Heffern. Ray Brandes, Dave Doyle, David Fleminger, Joel Kmak and Kevin Ring.
And usher in the evening with P-Touch All Stars, an old-fashioned industrial vaudeville revue featuring the talents of Todd Barker, David Fleminger, Paul Howland, Hannes Kling and Matthew Rothenberg.
There are more surprise guests in the works! Don’t spend the rest of your life regretting your absence — clear your evening now for this historic event.
A Che Underground Leap Night Showcase will kick off at 8:00 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 29, at The Riviera Supper Club & Turquoise Room, 7777 University Ave, La Mesa, CA 91941; (619) 713-6777.
Can’t wait to see everyone
I’m humbled. I feel it a privilege. And I hope I don’t suck!
It was nice to see Tom Ward at this show. I’m sorry we didn’t have more words together, beyond our greetings. I’m always going to be grateful for his flattering and favorable thoughts.
