Our ancestral stomping grounds recently suffered a theft. Dave Fleminger notes this August 7 notice on Craigslist, posted by the Che Cafe Collective:
“The Che Cafe … was broken into sometime between August 3 and August 5. ALL of our mics, xlr cables, direct in boxes, monitors, the sound board itself, ALL of it has been STOLEN. We’re looking at 8 to 10 thousand dollars worth of equipment gone.
“The plus side is shows WILL go on. We’ve been through too much already this year to let this even possibly end the Che Cafe. If you’re scheduled to play and are concerned please reply or get in touch with the person that has booked your show.
“Please repost and spread the word. Its a beyond messed up situation and we’re going to need help in getting everything back up to normal. If anyone hears anything, your friend suddenly has a sweet PA, sound system, plethora of mics and cables or notice what is probably our equipment on ebay or craigslist, etc, please please please contact us. “Specifically:
“Mackie 16 Channel 1604 VLZ Pro
“2 X QSC RMX 1450
“1 X QSC RMX 2450”
A bit more from MaximumRockNRoll.com.
i do have a mackie 24-channel board in good condition if you guys need a loaner or would like to purchase one at a very nice price.
sorry to hear of the shit-headed-ness.
This could be the nucleus of a new post: memories of favorite gear that was stolen, regrets over gear that was purchased and disappointing, or stuff that was sold only to be missed later. Conversely- incredible finds (that Vox teardrop in grandma’s closet, etc)!

Paul: My first electric guitar was a wonky Gibson SG with a lousy tone and no treble pickup. I also had a dumb little practice amp. (“Rock” brand, blonde wood cabinet … Anyone remember these?)
My stuff got stolen while I was traveling with my folks — but the insurance company gave me the new price on the guitar, so I was able to get the used Guild Starfire I still play, plus a Fender Twin Reverb. Thanks, thief!
In SD I had a Sears Harmony and the guitar case WAS the amp!! God, I wish I still had that.
Also, My Fender Duo-Sonic, (because of Patti Smith), my Dan Armstrong see-through guitar with interchangeable pick-ups, and of course, my Injections Fender Jaguar, my signature guitar.
I miss them like family. Never had a good amp, still don’t!!!!!
I dropped my Washburn A-20 Stage Series (it’s like an Explorer but rounder) while riding down a hill on a skateboard, holding it by the neck. It bounced head over tail and didn’t break!
I think Steve Duke’s bass was either stolen or run over during the Big John’s gig portrayed in this post. Some bad bass business.
how did this play out? was anything recovered?

Ava: I don’t believe so. Kristen Tobiason, who buzzed by on a reporting mission for us, is under the impression the place is not fully open at this time.
I just called their phone number, and the UCSD campus operator answered and said the Che turns its phones off for the summer.
I respect the egalitarian ethos, but it’s always been pretty much impossible to find one point of contact at the Che. I remember more than one gig we set up in ’83 where most of the collective were entirely unaware we were arriving or were freaked at our lack of hackey sacks and rasta caps.
